ABOUT THE HOUSTON KENSHIKAN

The Houston Kenshikan was founded in April of 2016 and is dedicated to the promotion of traditional Kendo and Iaido and more recently, Jodo, in the Houston area. The Kenshikan is new only in name. It has the honor of continuing a 50 year legacy from the first Houston Kendo and Iaido Dojo, the Houston Budokan. In addition, the Kenshikan follows the Koryu tradition of Muso Shinden Ryu.

The Houston Kenshikan is a traditional Dojo led by Mark Kerstein Sensei. We believe the purpose of the study of Kendo and Iaido is for the development of an individual. Instruction is curriculum based and practices are planned in advance so that students may learn in an efficient and effective manner. Furthermore, as the study of Budo is a lifelong journey, the cultivation of relationships between Dojomates is important. The Kenshikan emphasizes proper care of each other, such as helping the Senseis with their equipment, and participation in Second Dojo, when we enjoy a meal together after practice.

The Houston Kenshikan's name is meant to encompass a Dojo that studies both Iaido and Kendo in Houston. A Kenshi (剣士) is a student of the sword a Kan (館) is a place or Dojo.
